Terry Reid – Seed of Memory

Terry Reid's Seed of Memory arrived in 1976 as the singer-songwriter's fourth studio album and a clear change of course. After moving from Britain to California, Reid absorbed a West Coast atmosphere without losing the mix of rock, folk, blues and soul that had always given his music its character. Produced by Graham Nash, the album found Reid writing all eight songs himself and putting his voice and guitar at the centre of a more relaxed, melodic sound than some of his earlier records.

That shift is part of what makes the album so appealing. David Lindley, Ben Keith, Al Perkins and Nash add colour around Reid rather than crowding him, with pedal steel, violin, harmony vocals and understated arrangements opening up the songs. Tracks such as Brave Awakening and The Frame show how comfortably he worked in this lighter setting, while the title track and To Be Treated Rite later reached a wider audience through their inclusion in the 2005 film The Devil's Rejects.

This 2026 vinyl edition brings back an album that quietly broadened Reid's catalogue and has only grown in reputation with time. If you know him mainly through the near-mythic stories around Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, Seed of Memory is a strong reminder that his own records deserve the attention.
