About this album

Big Wave is one of Tatsuro Yamashita’s most distinctive albums, fusing city pop polish with surf-pop warmth and a soundtrack-like sense of scale. Issued in 1984, it reflects Yamashita’s gift for bright melodies, tightly arranged grooves and American pop influences reframed through a Japanese sensibility. The record moves between original material and reinterpretations, with songs such as The Theme From Big Wave, Your Eyes and Magic Ways showing how effortlessly he balances sophistication and easygoing charm. Widely regarded as a highlight of his 1980s run, it helped define the glossy, ocean-bright sound that made city pop so enduring.
