Ancient Heart is the breakthrough debut that made Tanita Tikaram a distinctive new voice in late-1980s pop. Released in 1988, the album blends folk-rooted songwriting, understated pop-rock arrangements and Tikaram’s remarkably deep, measured vocals into something both intimate and strikingly self-assured. Led by the hit Twist in My Sobriety and the earlier single Good Tradition, it turned personal, off-centre songwriting into mainstream success and gave the British singer-songwriter a lasting international profile. Its combination of emotional restraint, melodic clarity and atmospheric storytelling helped define the album’s enduring appeal.
