Sweet Trip – Velocity : Design : Comfort (2xLP, Coloured Vinyl)

Sweet Trip's Velocity: Design: Comfort arrived in 2003 as the San Francisco duo's second album, and its reputation has only grown since then. Built by Roberto Burgos and Valerie Reyes, the record was recorded at Burgos's home on computer, yet it feels anything but small-scale: a long, immersive set where shoegaze guitars, glitch programming, airy vocals and dance-derived rhythms are all pushed into the same frame.

Burgos and Reyes both wrote songs and lyrics, both played guitars and keyboards, and both sang, giving the album a real sense of shared design rather than a simple songwriter/producer split. The music pulls in recognizable touchstones, from Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine to Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, but the point here is how naturally those worlds meet. Tracks like Dsco, Velocity and International show how Sweet Trip could turn dense electronic detail into something melodic, dreamy and emotionally direct.

That hybrid has helped the album outlast its original moment. What was once an admired cult release has steadily found new listeners, and AllMusic later called it one of the best records of 2003, while Far Out placed it at number 7 in its 2019 list of the 50 best shoegaze albums of all time. This 2025 black-vinyl repress keeps one of the group's defining records in print for another generation of shoegaze and leftfield electronic fans.
