Swapmeet – Mount Zero

"Mount Zero", Swapmeet's debut album, is a rousing, guitar-heavy road trip that is reminiscent of the slowcore and alternative rock of the 90s and early 2000s and revitalizes this style. It marks the moment when the Australian quartet found its own identity. Following their dreamy debut EP "Oxalis" from 2024, "Mount Zero" is released shortly after the band signed to LA-based label Winspear, having caused a stir across Australia, taking home awards for Best Release and Best Song ("Ceiling Fan") at the South Australian Music Awards and winning "Best Newcomer" at SXSW Sydney.

"Mount Zero" combines breezy softness with quirky surrealism, transforming many of the regrets and insecurities of young adulthood into a burgeoning, newfound confidence. Although the members of Swapmeet often initially write their songs individually, the tracks on "Mount Zero" ultimately revolve around common themes: first loves, first heartbreaks, first embarrassments, first disasters. As they had done since their beginnings as a band, Swapmeet swapped instruments on "Mount Zero" and shared the production duties as a quartet.

They developed their sound by layering dozens (sometimes hundreds) of tracks in each song and then carefully removing elements until the production took a clear shape. The result is an album on which Swapmeet capture the teeth-grinding intensity of being changed on a cellular level under the relentless pressure of reality. It's a tribute to all the lives that can never be lived, all the paths that are never taken - and at the same time an ode to the life that lies right in front of us.
