Suicidal Tendencies is a ferocious hardcore debut that helped define the Los Angeles scene in the early 1980s. Released in 1983, it fused punk speed, metallic bite and deadpan black humour with Mike Muir’s jittery, confrontational lyricism, giving suburban frustration a new kind of voice. The album’s raw energy and blunt honesty made it a cult touchstone, and songs such as Institutionalized became scene-defining staples far beyond hardcore circles. Heavy, fast and sharply individual, the record showed how extreme punk could be both socially caustic and oddly relatable.
