Stray Cats is the breakthrough album that helped drag rockabilly back into the mainstream at the start of the 1980s. Released in 1981, it pairs Brian Setzer’s whip-smart guitar work and Elvis-channelling vocals with Lee Rocker’s upright bass and Slim Jim Phantom’s clipped, propulsive drumming, creating a sound that was both retro and sharply contemporary. Built around taut originals such as Runaway Boys, Rock This Town and Stray Cat Strut, the record became a calling card for the trio’s style and a key launch point for the wider rockabilly revival, especially in the UK and US.
