Hotter Than July is a sharp, socially minded statement from Stevie Wonder, balancing exuberant funk and pop with reggae-inflected rhythm and serious purpose. Released in 1980, the album followed a hugely successful run in the 1970s and showed Wonder widening his palette without losing his melodic instinct or political edge. Master Blaster (Jammin') became a major hit, while the record’s most lasting moment, Happy Birthday, helped keep the campaign for a national holiday in honour of Martin Luther King Jr. in the public ear. Lively, polished and unmistakably personal, it remains one of Wonder’s most important late-period albums.
