Steppenwolf 7 shows the band tightening its blues-rock attack into leaner, harder-edged form. Issued in 1970, it finds Steppenwolf moving beyond their late-’60s biker-image hits towards a tougher, more direct hard rock sound, with John Kay’s gravelly vocals and heavy riffing still at the centre. The album includes ‘Snow Blind Friend’, one of the group’s most striking anti-drug songs, alongside the driving ‘Renegade’ and the oddball energy of ‘Earschplittenloudenboomer’. By this point Steppenwolf had already become one of the defining American hard rock bands, and this set helped consolidate that reputation.
