Steppenwolf is a hard-driving debut that helped define late-1960s hard rock. Issued in 1968, the album fuses blues-rock grit with psychedelic attack, driven by John Kay’s gravelly vocals and a muscular band sound that gave the group instant identity. Its biggest landmark, Born to Be Wild, became an enduring anthem and a key song in the motorcycle-and-counterculture mythology of the era, while The Pusher and Hootchie Kootchie Man show the band’s tougher, more expansive side.
