About this album
The Royal Scam is one of Steely Dan’s most accomplished and caustic albums, sharpening the duo’s blend of pop hooks, jazz harmonies and sardonic wit. Issued in 1976, it features some of their most enduring songs, including Kid Charlemagne and Don’t Take Me Alive, and leans further into complex arrangements and immaculate studio craft than much of contemporary rock. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker’s tightly controlled approach gives the record its cool precision, while the lyrics sketch hustlers, outsiders and uneasy American dreams with unusual detail. It helped confirm Steely Dan as masters of sophisticated, adult rock.
