Released in 1979, it built on the band’s early promise with tighter writing, brighter hooks and the observational humour of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook. Produced by John Wood, the record balances jaunty new-wave energy with character studies and London detail, making songs such as the title track and Up the Junction feel both sharp and instantly memorable. It confirmed Squeeze as one of the most distinctive songwriting partnerships of the late 1970s and helped define their place in the UK new-wave era.
