Spillage Village – Spilligion (Coloured Vinyl)

Spillage Village, JID and EarthGang’s Spilligion is the 2020 fourth album from the Atlanta collective and their major-label debut, arriving after years in which members such as EarthGang, JID, Mereba and 6LACK had built distinct solo reputations. Framed around faith, love, family and weed, it channels Southern rap history through psychedelic gospel interludes, rumbling low end and a communal, campfire-style sense of exchange rather than a straightforward posse record.

The group here includes EarthGang, JID, Hollywood JB, Jurdan Bryant, Mereba, 6LACK and Benji, with guests including Ari Lennox, Chance the Rapper, Ant Clemons, Buddy, Masego, Lucky Daye and Big Rube. Much of the production comes from inside the camp too, with Olu, Benji, Christo and Hollywood JB handling the core sound and outside contributions from producers including Monte Booker and Elite. That helps explain why the album moves so fluidly between rap, R&B, choral passages and more exploratory textures.

What makes Spilligion especially rewarding is how loose spiritual themes are matched by real musical range: tracks such as “PsalmSing,” “Mecca” and “Baptize” show how easily the collective can shift from harmony-led reflection to detailed, agile rap writing. It’s a warm, ambitious group album that makes the most of Spillage Village’s chemistry while opening their world up to a wider audience.
