About this album
Saxophone Colossus is Sonny Rollins’ landmark 1957 album and one of the defining statements of modern tenor jazz. Recorded with Tommy Flanagan, Doug Watkins and Max Roach, it shows Rollins combining muscular swing, inventive phrasing and a remarkable sense of melody. The set includes enduring pieces such as “St. Thomas”, “Strode Rode” and “Blue Seven”, alongside a famously reimagined reading of “Moritat”. Critically acclaimed on release and later canonised as a hard-bop touchstone, the album helped establish Rollins as one of the most original improvisers of his era and remains a high point in the jazz catalogue.
