About this album

Sky’s The Great Balloon Race is a polished late-period prog-rock album that shows the group’s classical training and melodic instinct at full strength. Released in 1985, it continues the ensemble’s blend of rock energy with chamber-like arrangements, keeping the emphasis on musicianship rather than bombast. The record reflects Sky’s reputation for precise, accessible instrumental work, shaped by players with backgrounds in both progressive rock and the concert hall. With its elegant themes and high technical polish, The Great Balloon Race stands as a strong example of how prog could remain sophisticated, tuneful and widely appealing well into the 1980s.
