  • Siouxsie and the Banshees’ Juju arrived in June 1981 as the band’s fourth studio album, and it still feels like a defining statement from the British post-punk underground at the moment goth’s imagery and tension were being sharpened into something fully formed. After the more electronic textures of Kaleidoscope, the group turned back toward a tougher guitar-led attack, with John McGeoch’s wiry, unconventional playing and Budgie’s intricate, tom-heavy percussion pushing the record into darker, more physical territory.

What makes Juju so gripping is how precisely its atmosphere is built. Producer Nigel Gray gives the album an immediate, close-quarters intensity, while Steven Severin’s bass anchors songs that feel ritualistic rather than simply gloomy. “Spellbound” and “Arabian Knights” became its key singles, but the album works best as a complete world: claustrophobic, rhythmic, and full of sinister wordplay, from the unease of “Head Cut” to the long, unnerving finale “Voodoo Dolly.”

That balance of strong hooks and unnerving detail is why Juju is so often singled out in the Banshees catalogue. It was a UK commercial success on release, drew particular praise for McGeoch’s guitar work and Siouxsie Sioux’s vocals, and remains one of the clearest examples of how the band could make adventurous, unsettling music feel immediate and memorable. This edition also matters for vinyl listeners: it brought the album back into print as a half-speed remaster from the original quarter-inch tapes, cut at Abbey Road with Siouxsie Sioux and Steven Severin overseeing both audio and artwork.
