A New Flame cemented Simply Red’s rise as one of the most successful British soul-pop acts of the late 1980s. Released in 1989, the album sharpened Mick Hucknall’s blend of polished pop, Motown-inspired soul and emotionally direct songwriting, helping the band break further into the mainstream after the success of Picture Book. Produced by Stewart Levine, it pairs sleek arrangements with a stronger sense of melodic punch, while the cover of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes’ If You Don’t Know Me By Now became one of the group’s defining hits. Its chart success helped establish Simply Red as a major international act.
