Oil And Gold is Shriekback’s most distinctive early statement, tightening the band’s art-rock instincts into a nervous, propulsive blend of new wave, synth-pop and funk. Released in 1985, it pushed beyond post-punk atmosphere towards sharper hooks and darker textures, with Barry Andrews, Carl Marsh and Dave Allen giving the record a tense, restless edge. Songs such as Nemesis and This Big Hush helped define the album’s reputation, balancing biting rhythmic drive with cryptic, unsettling imagery. Its blend of sophistication and menace made Oil And Gold one of Shriekback’s most admired releases and a key mid-80s art-pop record.
