Beneath The Remains is Sepultura’s breakthrough thrash album, sharpening the Brazilian band’s attack into one of late-1980s metal’s most influential records. Released in 1989, it marked the point where their speed, precision and political intensity reached a wider international audience, helped by Scott Burns’ production at Morrisound in Florida. The album’s lean, aggressive writing and standout songs such as Inner Self and Mass Hypnosis pushed Sepultura beyond cult status and established them as a major force in extreme metal. Its impact helped pave the way for the heavier, more technically ambitious metal that followed in the 1990s.
