About this album

Morning Island is a vibrant late-70s statement from Sadao Watanabe, balancing jazz-funk drive with smooth, melodic playing and Latin-inflected rhythmic colour. Issued in 1979, the album shows the Japanese saxophonist working at the intersection of jazz, funk and Afro-Cuban influence, a blend that helped make his music accessible without losing its improvisational edge. Watanabe’s warm tenor sound and lyrical phrasing give the record its identity, while the title piece and set-flowing originals underline his gift for elegant, groove-led composition. It stands as one of the key albums in his international-facing catalogue.
