Jazz finds Ry Cooder turning the album into a playful, finely researched survey of early American music. Released in 1978, it blends ragtime, blues and pre-swing jazz traditions with Cooder’s distinctive slide guitar, drawing on material associated with the 1920s and 1930s as well as his own sly arranging sense. The result is less a nostalgic pastiche than a vivid reanimation of old forms, full of character and detail. As with much of Cooder’s best work, the record treats roots music as something living and mutable, helped by his knack for making historical repertoire sound immediate, witty and unexpectedly modern.
