About this album
First Take is the breakthrough debut that introduced Roberta Flack as a major interpreter of jazz, soul and protest material. Released in 1969, the album moved effortlessly from political urgency on 'Compared To What' to a devastatingly intimate reading of 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', the song that later became her signature and a major chart success. Produced by Joel Dorn and recorded with an uncluttered, attentive touch, it highlights Flack’s control, phrasing and emotional restraint rather than vocal display. Its mix of gospel feeling, folk material and modern soul helped make her one of the most distinctive voices of her era.
