The Six Wives of Henry VIII is Rick Wakeman’s breakthrough solo statement and one of progressive rock’s most distinctive concept albums. Released in 1973, it turns the Tudor monarch’s six wives into a series of instrumental portraits, using Wakeman’s keyboards to move between symphonic scale, classical motifs and hard-rock drive. Best known for his work with Yes, Wakeman here proved he could carry an entire album with imagination and technical flair. The record helped define the era’s ambitious fusion of rock and classical music, and its suite-like structure remains a model for prog-rock composition.
