Q-Tip's Amplified arrived in November 1999, just after the initial breakup of A Tribe Called Quest, and it catches him redrawing his sound in public. Rather than simply extending Tribe's jazz-rap template, Q-Tip leans into sleeker, synth-led grooves and a more club-facing bounce, making this solo debut a clear turning point in his catalogue.
Much of that shift comes from the production: Q-Tip worked closely with Jay Dee, later widely known as J Dilla, under the Ummah banner, and the result balances warm low end, clipped percussion and a polished late-'90s futurism. That setting suits Q-Tip's easy, conversational flow, whether he's gliding through the snap of "Breathe and Stop," the crossover pull of "Vivrant Thing," or the more relaxed swing of "Let's Ride."
What still makes Amplified worth hearing is how it holds two ideas at once. It has obvious mainstream reach, but it never feels anonymous; the album still carries Q-Tip's phrasing, melodic instinct and producer's ear for detail. With guest spots including Busta Rhymes and an unexpected appearance from Korn on "End of Time," it also captures a moment when hip-hop was testing new textures at the turn of the millennium. This reissue brings back a key first chapter in Q-Tip's solo run.
