Protomartyr – Hotel Usona

Protomartyr's Hotel Usona is the Detroit band's seventh studio album, arriving in 2026 with a concept that turns America into an ageing hotel, each song occupying a room haunted by a different strain of contemporary unease. That framing gives the record a sharp social focus from the outset, with Joe Casey writing about paralysis, deportation, warped patriotism, political extremism and the pressures of fatherhood rather than settling for general apocalypse.

Recorded with Dave Fridmann at Tarbox Road Studios in western New York, the album pushes Protomartyr's post-punk into a broader, more atmospheric shape. Greg Ahee draws in touches of Middle Eastern music and 1950s exotica, while Fridmann's production gives Alex Leonard's drumming extra force and makes Jon Fridmann's horn parts feel like part of the record's uneasy architecture rather than simple decoration. Tracks including Sounds We Cannot Hear, Feed the Sewer and Third Country suggest how directly the band are engaging with the present moment.

What makes Hotel Usona especially compelling is how it extends a catalogue that has spent more than two decades staring down dread without losing shape or purpose. The scale sounds bigger here, but the tension is still recognisably Protomartyr: severe, intelligent, and alive to the absurdity inside the collapse. For a band already known for turning discomfort into momentum, this feels like one of their most expansive statements.
