Prince – The Hits 2 (2xLP)

Prince's The Hits 2 was originally released in 1993, alongside The Hits 1 and the larger The Hits/The B-Sides set, as the first dedicated overview of his catalogue. This volume follows Prince from 1979 to 1993 and leans into the more provocative, sensual, and mischievous side of his writing, while still making room for songs that had already become part of pop history.

Across 18 tracks, it pulls together singles from the first 15 years of his recording career, from the early charge of “I Wanna Be Your Lover” and “Controversy” to crossover staples like “Kiss,” “Little Red Corvette,” and “Purple Rain.” That range is the point: The Hits 2 shows how easily Prince moved between tight funk, sly R&B, pop hooks, and arena-sized drama without losing his personality. It also includes “U Got The Look,” his duet with Sheena Easton, which helps sketch the collaborative side of his imperial phase.

This set is also more than a recap. Alongside 16 established singles, Prince added the then previously unreleased “Peach” and “Pope,” giving the collection real value even for listeners who knew the albums already. Back on vinyl for the first time in decades in this 2022 edition from The Prince Estate and NPG Records, it remains a smart way into one of pop’s deepest catalogues.
