The Woman I Loved So Well is a beautifully wrought late-period Planxty album, balancing instrumental finesse with deep Irish traditional songcraft. Released in 1980, it finds the quartet returning after a hiatus with arrangements that are precise, understated and emotionally direct, drawing on reels, jigs and ballads without ever sounding academic. The interplay of bouzouki, guitar, accordion, flute and uilleann pipes gives the record its distinctive lift, while songs such as the title track and Little Musgrave show how naturally Planxty bridged old source material and contemporary folk sensibility. It remains one of the group’s most admired statements.
