Doolittle is the Pixies’ breakthrough statement, a sharp, caustic and unexpectedly melodic album that helped set the template for alternative rock in the 1990s. Released in 1989, it sharpened the band’s contrast of whispered menace, exploding guitar dynamics and surreal, often blackly comic lyrics. Produced by Gil Norton, the record pairs visceral songs such as Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven and Here Comes Your Man with a sense of pop structure that made the chaos unforgettable. Widely regarded as one of the group’s essential albums, Doolittle became a touchstone for indie rock and influenced a generation of louder, stranger guitar bands.
