Issued in 1980 after a run of increasingly exploratory solo work, it shows the Who guitarist refining his writing into something leaner and more direct, with biting guitar, restless energy and a more exposed lyrical edge. Let My Love Open the Door became his best-known solo hit, while Rough Boys and A Little Is Enough underline how strongly the record balances melody with tension. Widely regarded as one of Townshend’s key non-Who statements, the album helped confirm him as a major songwriter in his own right.
