Pet Shop Boys – A Man From the Future

Pet Shop Boys’ A Man From The Future turns the life of Alan Turing into an eight-part musical biography, tracing the mathematician, codebreaker and computer pioneer through songs, spoken narration and orchestral-electronic writing. First performed at the BBC Proms in 2014, the work arrives here as a new 2026 studio recording, giving this unusual project a proper album form rather than leaving it as a one-off concert piece.

What makes it especially interesting in the Pet Shop Boys catalogue is how fully Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe commit to the hybrid format. They created the piece with Turing biographer Andrew Hodges, drawing narration from Alan Turing: The Enigma, edited and extended by Tennant and Hodges, and spoken on the album by Juliet Stevenson. The score combines the duo’s electronics with strings arranged by Sven Helbig, performed by the Manchester Camerata Octet, while boys from Manchester Grammar School Choir appear on four tracks.

That mix of synth-pop precision, chamber textures and spoken-word framing gives A Man From The Future a distinct character within the duo’s long career. Produced by Pet Shop Boys with Helbig, it explores eight significant chapters in Turing’s life and death, with titles such as “The Enigma” and “Only in his death” pointing to both the scientific achievement and the human cost at the centre of the story.
