Pearl Jam's Yield arrived in 1998 as the band's fifth studio album, at a moment when they were moving out of their early grunge pigeonhole and into a broader, more open-ended kind of rock writing. These sessions with Brendan O'Brien also reflected a more collective band dynamic, with Mike McCready, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament and Jack Irons bringing in completed songs for Eddie Vedder to shape with lyrics. The result was a record with a more accessible, melodic pull that still kept Pearl Jam's restlessness intact, and it went on to become their fifth consecutive RIAA platinum album.
What makes Yield last is the balance it strikes. Songs like “Given to Fly,” “Wishlist,” and “Do the Evolution” show Pearl Jam stretching between uplift, reflection and bite, while the album as a whole feels more direct than the detours of No Code without sounding like a retreat. “Do the Evolution” in particular became a defining statement from this period, tied to the more openly political streak that would run through later Pearl Jam records.
This edition matters because it was the first time Yield had been available on vinyl since its original 1998 release, with Bob Ludwig mastering it specifically for the format. The presentation also stays close to the original release, including the die-cut sleeve and Yield sign sticker, which makes this a thoughtful way back into one of Pearl Jam's most tuneful late-90s albums.
