Slanted and Enchanted is Pavement’s breakthrough album and one of the defining indie rock records of the 1990s. Released in 1992, it turned slack-cool melodies, skewed guitar lines and offhand humour into a fresh alternative language, helping set the template for lo-fi American indie rock. Built around Stephen Malkmus’s wiry songwriting and the band’s deliberately rough-edged interplay, the album balances infectious hooks with a sense of derailment that made it feel both casual and carefully iconoclastic. Its reputation has only grown, with critics widely regarding it as a landmark of post-punk-influenced art rock.
