Paul Simon is a remarkably assured solo debut, showing the songwriter stepping out from Simon & Garfunkel with sharper detail, looser arrangements and a more personal voice. Released in 1972, the album drew on pop, folk and Caribbean-inflected rhythms, with Mother and Child Reunion and Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard becoming standout singles that signalled his new direction. Working with producers Roy Halee and Simon himself, he blends conversational storytelling, reflective humour and melodic precision across songs that became central to his solo reputation.
