Hearts and Bones is one of Paul Simon’s most finely drawn and quietly challenging solo albums, turning personal doubt and fractured relationships into elegantly crafted pop-rock. Released in 1983, it followed the massive commercial reach of Graceland and instead leant into intricate writing, dry humour and sharply observed detail. Songs such as “Allergies”, “When Numbers Get Serious” and the title track show Simon balancing melodic ease with lyrical restlessness, while “Train in the Distance” and “Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War” underline his gift for miniature storytelling. Though initially underappreciated, it is now widely regarded as a deeply accomplished work.
