About this album
Gossip is a sharp, career-making EP that helped establish Paul Kelly and The Messengers as one of Australian rock’s most distinctive songwriting outfits. Issued in 1986, it captures Kelly’s gift for plainspoken detail and emotional clarity, backed by a band sound that keeps the arrangements direct and punchy. Moving between reflective observation and wiry rock energy, the record strengthens the vivid, everyday storytelling that would become Kelly’s hallmark. Its songs fed into a period that built his reputation far beyond cult status, and it remains an important early statement in a catalogue defined by craft, character and narrative insight.
