About this album
Easter is Patti Smith Group’s breakthrough album, where punk urgency meets sharper melody and literary ambition. Released in 1978, it broadened Smith’s sound without dulling its edge, and became the record that brought her widest audience. Produced by Jimmy Iovine, the album balances raw intensity with tighter songcraft, most famously on ‘Because the Night’, the Bruce Springsteen co-write that became a major hit and one of Smith’s signature songs. Alongside its political bite and poetic imagery, Easter helped define the creative reach of late-70s new wave and remains one of Patti Smith’s most important statements.
