Panda Bear, Sonic Boom – A ? of WHEN

The music of Panda Bear and Sonic Boom has always been a playground: a place where sound experiments, loops, and unexpected ideas come together. While Sonic Boom once reimagined the balance between drone and pop with Spacemen 3 and later experimented with modular synths, Panda Bear—solo or with Animal Collective—creates dazzling soundscapes that blend noise, folk, and electronic music. Their joint debut, *Reset* (2022), felt like a creative breakthrough amid the fog of the pandemic.

With “A ? of When,” they continue this playful spirit but take it even further. Harp loops, steel drums, pedal steel, even yodeling: the duo deliberately draws on supposedly “uncool” material and turns it into something of their own. Songs like “Something Like Dreaming” or “Like a Moth to a Flame” blend playful psychedelia with catchy melodies, as if you were hopping from station to station through a musical adventure playground.

At the same time, the tone grows more serious. The ten tracks explore digital exhaustion, political upheavals, and environmental issues, all without losing their lightheartedness. Inspired by a world of “AI slop,” algorithmic white noise, and constant connectivity, Panda Bear and Sonic Boom are consciously seeking out other forms of connection: less scrolling, more real-life experiences, more radio, live shows, listening parties, and in-person encounters. Instead of cynicism, they focus on empathy, happiness, and mutual support.

At its core, however, the album remains an act of appropriation: sounds from different contexts are reassembled, carried by unusual percussion such as the harp and steel drums. The result is music that is both playful and reflective. “A ? of When” looks at a contradictory world and transforms it into something that brings people together. It’s not a grand promise of salvation, but an invitation to immerse ourselves in it together, offline.

Consequently, the album will not be available on streaming platforms: Panda Bear and Sonic Boom are instead focusing on real-life encounters, listening sessions, and direct exchange beyond the constant barrage of algorithmic noise.
