About this album
ATLiens is the album that pushed OutKast from promising Atlanta upstarts into singular innovators. Released in 1996, it deepened the duo’s Southern hip hop vision with woozy, futuristic production, sharper writing and a cooler, more inward-looking mood than their debut. Built around André 3000 and Big Boi’s distinctive chemistry, the record helped define the sound of mid-’90s alternative rap while keeping its hooks and detail unmistakably mainstream. Songs such as Elevators (Me & You) became landmark statements, and the album is widely regarded as one of OutKast’s essential releases and a key moment in Southern rap’s rise.
