King & Queen is a sparkling Stax duet album that pairs Carla Thomas and Otis Redding at their most natural and charismatic. Released in 1967, it brought together two of Memphis soul’s most distinctive voices for a set built on playful chemistry, sharp call-and-response arrangements and the label’s lean, hard-grooving rhythm section. The album is best known for “Tramp”, a crossover favourite that became one of the pair’s signature recordings, but the whole record shines with the ease of artists who knew exactly how to spar, tease and complement one another. It stands as one of the great male-female soul collaborations of the era.
