About this album

High Priestess Of Soul is a striking statement from Nina Simone at a peak of expressive authority. Issued in 1967, the album shows her moving fluidly between jazz, soul, blues and protest-song intensity, with a repertoire that ranges from sharp social commentary to reinterpretations of familiar material. Simone’s commanding piano, vocal nuance and emotional directness give the record its force, making even quieter moments feel charged. In the wider context of her 1960s work, it stands as one of the releases that helped define her as an artist who could turn popular song into something intellectually and emotionally urgent.
