    About this album

I Cry, I Smile is a confident debut that introduced Narada Michael Walden as a gifted singer, songwriter and producer with a distinctive blend of soul, funk and pop polish. Released in 1977, the album balances buoyant grooves with reflective, socially aware writing, moving easily from the joyful charge of I Need Your Love and Soul Bird to the title track’s more searching mood. Walden’s performances are expressive and self-assured throughout, with the record showing the melodic range and rhythmic finesse that would later make him an important figure in R&B and pop production. It is an impressive first statement from an artist with both heart and studio discipline.
