Mungo Jerry’s debut album extends the band’s breakout appeal with a rough, infectious blend of skiffle, blues and boogie. Released in 1970, it built on the huge success of “In the Summertime” and showed the group’s knack for making roots music feel immediate and broad-appeal. Led by Ray Dorset’s informal vocal style and acoustic-led arrangements, the record mixes traditional material with originals, giving the album a loose, country-blues energy that suits the band’s pub-rock spirit. It is a key early statement from one of Britain’s most recognisable early-1970s hits acts.
