Hard Again is one of Muddy Waters’s great late-career statements, a Grammy-winning comeback that restored the force and grit of Chicago blues. Recorded in 1977 with producer and guitarist Johnny Winter at the helm, the album paired Waters with a crack band that pushed his voice and guitar back into sharp focus. Winter’s no-nonsense production kept the performances urgent and direct, while Waters delivered renewed power on signature material such as “Mannish Boy” and “I Can’t Be Satisfied”. Widely regarded as a landmark of blues revival, it showed that Waters’s influence was not just historical but still vividly present.
