About this album
Morrissey’s solo debut Viva Hate turned post-Smiths defiance into one of the most distinctive indie rock albums of the late 1980s. Released in 1988 and produced by Stephen Street, it paired caustic wordplay with crisp, melodic arrangements that gave Morrissey’s voice room to brood, sneer and confess in equal measure. Led by the enduring singles Suedehead and Everyday Is Like Sunday, the album established his solo identity without softening the lyrical bite that made him famous. Its sharp humour, melancholy and Northern English detail helped make Viva Hate a landmark opening statement for one of Britain’s most idiosyncratic songwriters.
