About this album
Porgy And Bess is one of Miles Davis’ most celebrated orchestral albums, a daring 1959 reimagining of George Gershwin’s opera with arrangements by Gil Evans. Rather than treating the source material as museum-piece jazz, Davis and Evans turn it into a vivid studio suite, balancing muted trumpet lyricism with brass colour, ensemble drama and modern harmonic movement. Recorded during the same fertile period as Miles Ahead and Sketches of Spain, it helped define the Davis-Evans partnership and remains a landmark for large-ensemble jazz. Its readings of songs such as Summertime and I Loves You, Porgy have become enduring reference points for both jazz interpretation and orchestral arranging.
