Recorded live in 1961 at the Blackhawk in San Francisco, it catches Davis, Hank Mobley, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb working with remarkable balance: cool command on the surface, hard swing underneath, and a growing openness that points towards modal jazz. The set’s extended readings of tunes such as So What and Oleo show how Davis could make club performances feel quietly radical. It remains one of the essential live statements from a pivotal period in modern jazz.
