    Tubular Bells is the breakthrough album that made Mike Oldfield a star and helped define progressive rock in the 1970s. Issued in 1973, his debut was an extraordinary multi-instrumental project largely performed by Oldfield himself, with its two expansive sides unfolding through shifting motifs rather than conventional songs. Richard Branson’s Virgin label gave it a platform, and the record gained worldwide fame after its opening theme was used in The Exorcist, turning an ambitious instrumental suite into a cultural phenomenon.
