About this album
Tiger In The Rain is a refined late-1970s statement from Michael Franks, balancing jazz-funk groove with his cool, conversational vocal style. Issued in 1979, the album sits at the point where Franks’ urbane songwriting and soft-focus pop-jazz sensibility fully clicked, giving his material a relaxed but meticulously crafted feel. Its blend of melodic restraint, harmonic sophistication and understated rhythm helped establish him as one of the era’s most distinctive vocal jazz stylists. The title track and songs such as Sanpaku and Underneath The Apple Tree show his gift for turning observational writing into elegant, approachable music.
