About this album
Blue Lines is the landmark debut that helped define trip hop and put Bristol on the musical map. Released in 1991, Massive Attack blended hip hop rhythms, dub bass, soul samples and understated vocals into a tense, nocturnal sound that felt radically new. With key moments such as “Unfinished Sympathy” and “Safe From Harm”, the album balanced club weight with emotional depth, while the production by the group and Nellee Hooper gave it a spacious, cinematic pull. Widely regarded as one of the most important British albums of the era, it opened a new path for electronic and alternative pop in the 1990s.
