Marina Herlop's Dja Dja arrives as the Catalan composer's first self-released album and the follow-up to 2023's Nekkuja, pushing her already singular sound into a larger, more deliberately structured form. Built around the idea of the hero's journey, Herlop conceived the record as one interconnected piece rather than a loose set of songs, using a design she compared to a giant Sudoku puzzle.
That conceptual rigor matters because the music itself is so alive and unpredictable. Much of Dja Dja was made in Herlop's home studio, then expanded with recordings of Balinese gamelan ensembles, orchestral brass and bass elements, and densely layered rhythmic detail. Her longtime collaborator Adri Goor helped shape those musical decisions, while Herlop kept the voice at the centre: fragmented melodies, recurring motifs and formal patterns that make even the album's strangest turns feel purposeful.
The result sounds more open without becoming any less adventurous. Jaque offers a sharp introduction to the record's balance of vocal experiment and compositional discipline, while the full album is designed to unfold as a continuous emotional arc, shaped by anger, gratitude and resilience. Early coverage has already singled it out as her most ambitious work to date, which fits an album made with this much scale, patience and independence.
